government would work to silence Quinn, arresting him and writing him off as a lunatic. He would send pieces of the Yautja battle armor to his home to expose evidence of alien life. Marine who had managed to defeat a Predator at the beginning of the film. It starts with all of us.While there was ample focus on the extensive ensemble for The Predator (2018), the lead character was Quinn McKenna, a U.S. It's our responsibility, as Judy Hopps says, to "look inside yourself and recognize that change starts with you. As viewers, our responsibility is to absorb the film's message as it is intended, which is confront the issues of systemic discrimination and racism. All things considered, they did a pretty good job. Disney took on a huge task when creating Zootopia, and they tried to provide a simple answer to an extremely complicated topic. Zootopia's message definitely gets confusing at some points, but overall, its intentions are pure. If that is the message that people are taking away from this film, then Disney missed the mark entirely. This idea of prey fearing predators almost presents the message that fearing or "othering" people of color is justified because they are thought to be dangerous. It implies that certain races are, at the core, simple-minded and uncivilized, and it sounds a lot like the origins of racism and colonialism. It can be likened to the terrible use of the word "thug" that is thrown around in the media today. The idea of labeling the predator group, who are meant to represent people of color, as "savage" sends the wrong message entirely. Judy's journey through confronting her prejudice is the lesson that America needs today.Īdditionally, when someone faces racial discrimination, it isn't because they are a "savage" group out to get White people, but if viewers are to take the film literally, this is the conclusion they're forced to draw. In the end, she owns up to her prejudices, admitting to Nick that she was ignorant and small-minded. She believes that the predators have a biological instinct to be savage, and when she shares this with the media, she deeply hurts her predator-friend Nick. This is done through the character of Judy Hopps, a bunny cop, who believes she is forward-thinking, but she carries a lot of internalized prejudice. This microaggression is a common one viewers see in reality, with White mothers pulling their children away from the "scary" Black or Brown man. When a tiger sits down next to them, the bunny mom pulls her child closer to her, away from the tiger. In one scene, audiences see a bunny mother on the train with her child. Similarly to reality, the Zootopians struggle with microaggressions, which are strewn throughout the film. "If the whole world is going to see a fox as untrustworthy," Nick says, "there's no point in trying to be anything else." This example teaches viewers how stereotyping, systemic racism and projecting is extremely harmful, and how it creates a vicious cycle that is hard to escape. Nick Wilde, a fox, lives up to his species' stereotype as a sneaky popsicle peddler, who should not to be trusted by anyone. He became what he is because society told him throughout his life that he was just an untrustworthy nobody. Stereotyping is another important issue that the film presents. In order to survive, people of color had to theoretically become as White as they possibly could, and this still rings true today. The evolution is due to predators becoming more like the prey by abandoning their instincts and assimilating into a "civilized" lifestyle. This mirrors the way the White colonists labeled the people they conquered as savages, forcing them to adapt to a "civilized," Euro-centric way of living. The beginning of the film introduces viewers to the origin of racism in the world of Zootopia.
